I have a 15months old baby. She was eating well until 15days back. She used to eat Rice+Dal grinded to powder then cooked with Carrot or Beetroot, twice a day. In middle Cerelac for 3 times and one time Apple pulp. But she never had milk, she always runs away from milk.
But from about 15days, she is not accepting any food properly. She is not eating Rice, Apple pulp. Just taking Cerelac and that too after a lot of crying. I am trying the milk, but of no use. She used to take the food in the paste form. I usually make her lie on my legs and feed with the spoon, because if I try to make her sit and give her grinded rice, she is just spitting off. She spits a lot what ever food we give her.
I am a working women, but I dont have any issues in taking care of my girl, because my office is too flexible.
Please can anyone suggest me, how to make her to eat and more importantly, how to make her to drink milk. She doesnt take any liquid other than water, if we try even coconut water also, she doesnt take. I try giving her apple juice or carrot juice, but she just look at the color and think that its not water, so she avoids it too.
When I have taken her to the doctor, he has given me a syrup for her digestion and some vitamin syrup. Her Digestion syrup also is not helping her to feel hungry. I can say, she is never hungry
I am very much worried from past 15days. Your suggestions or comments would help me a lot
Thanks,
Kranthi

mommy replied. Try adding some flavour in milk, like chocolate. I tried bournvita in milk and No sugar, and it was succesfull.
at this age of 15 months dont give her food in paste form, try seating her with u at ur meal time. and offer her something frm ur plate.
bharti replied. one more suggestion, my baby (18mnths) was not eating properly for around 10-15 days. anything i gave to her, she just rejected eating. when i consulted to doc, he told me that it is because of change of season (are you in india?) and also because of irritation in her throat. so this might be the reason with your baby. so if no remedy helps, pls. consult to doc as she might be having some internal probl.

momsays replied. Gerber juice is good. I used to regularly give it to my daughter. Do please check the expiration dates before offering it to her. But the juices from Gerber may not be multivitamin fortified , they will be rich in only Vitamin C the natural ingredient in fruits. Also please make sure that the store that you getting the juice from maintain it in a cool place or in the fridge (even though its not necessary to keep it in the fridge but with Indian temp soaring high in the summer, you may want to check that too). Plus they are good too as they dont have any extra sugar added, they are only natural fruit juice.
Please also follow instructions in the juice, say if you open it then you can keep in fridge only for 3 days etc.
There Tropicana' s Healthy Kids Orange Juice calcium fortified.
You may go to Tropicana' s web site
All the best.
momsays replied. Dear Kranthi,
Looks like you are having a smart kid. There are many times, when babies will not accept a particular type of food.
But you should also check with your pediatrian for any allergy etc. From the looks of it, its looks like you have a smart child. But do check up.
In the US, there is a calcium fortified orange juice available with added vitamins that may be given to a 15 month old child. But I am not sure if its available in India.
You say that you have tried strawberry milk but what about chocolate, sometimes kids like that.
Here' s also one more tactic, even though this is not a very good one. Invite other kids in the neighbourhood /your family and offer them strawberry milk or mango shake. Offer her too a little bit say 1 oz in the same glasses that you offer to other kids. This may work sometimes, but depends.
Also you may stop using the bottle and start using small tumblers with a little bit of milk a sip and say that if you dont drink it then you will give it to your husband, or grandpa or grandma, etc. and if you have someone in the family ask them to take a drink out of it.
You can try taking to a nice hotel on a weekend and offer her a good nice looking milk shake or smoothie? may be she will drink Or offer her icecream?
Then if she drinks, you can make icecream at home and offer her.
Well all the best!! But keep trying and she may just start drinking after 15 days or so.
momsays replied. Dear Kranthi,
Good to see that something is workout.
For making her to drink milk. You may try use different glasses, like colorful ones (make sure they are safe for baby use)
Avoid giving her too much fluid before giving her milk, so that you may make her thirsty for milk.
Also try by adding some choclate syrup/strawberry syrup that may help sometimes. But make sure that you brush/wipe her teeth afterwards to prevent tooth decay. Dont say that its milk to her, say its something new like icecream etc and may be she will drink.
If she is not drinking milk all times but some times in the day, then you can also give her curd/yogurt or cheese.
This way you will be able to compensate for the milk couple times during the day.
Check with the pediatrician as to how much milk/calcium etc your child needs say 16 oz a day or 24 oz a day and accordingly you can plan.
all the best
momsays replied. Try giving differnt varieties of food to your baby. Like freshly made rotis cut into bite size pieces. Papad, rice cooked. Steamed fresh peas, finely cut carrot pressure cooked etc.
Give enough gap for your baby to feel hungry. Also make sure that she gets enough activity like walking , crawling , running around etc.
Dont give cerelac and then immediately food.
You can also divert her by showing her toys and then give food.
Check with a good doctor, wash hands, clean vessels, wash your baby hands also before feeding.
Good luck

same problem even I had when my daughter was 15 months... I am sure digestive medicine will surely help.. but need to wait for the results.. one more thing always make sure that u r using katori & spoon sterlised.. hope u r giving ur daughter medicine for worms once in every 6 months..
every day take ur daughter out for playing twice... this also helps a lot..
one more thing.. she is above one year pls dont feed ur daughter by putting on her on yr laps.. same mistakes I too did.. give her finger foods .. like apple thin slices, carrot , biscuits grapes..
Teething can also be one reason... give her small idlis in her hand.. and surely make her hungry by keeping gap between two meals and then feed

dear,
you can try giving her juices in coloured sippers, which are covered with lid. so that kid is not able to identify what drink it is. other thing, i am also a mother of a 18 mnts old baby, who never drinks milk but is happy with orange and other juices. you can try giving her, milkshakes (with mango , coffee etc.) and the problem not drinking milk can be done by giving her other dairy products like paneer, lassi, curd etc.
try giving her in different shaped bowls and glasses (with cover). i think it may work. bharti.

Hi,
Thanks a lot for taking time to reply back. I also see that you replied to many of the questions here in this board. Its good to have people like you who can suggest us.
Regarding, my daughter drinking milk, as you said I tried to give her strawberry milk. But even that she doesnt like. She likes maaza.. so one day i made the mango milk shake, put that in the maaza bottle, and poured that milk shake from that maaza bottle in front of her, into her bottle, and told her that I am giving her maaza. She had 3 to 4 sips, and identified that it is not maaza, then stopped taking it.
Sometimes, I dont giver her water and just fill her bottle with the strawberry milk or milk with boost, but she never go to her bottle. But if she sees water in her bottle, then goes to have it.
I tried curd, but she doesnt like that too. In the night when I try to give her milk in the feeding bottle, she identifies that too and doesnt even keep the bottle in her mouth. I breast feed her during nights, I do not know whether she is getting milk or not, but just keeps it in mouth and she likes that a lot. She hugs me like anything when I start to breast feed her. But I know that Iam not getting sufficient milk for her during breastfeed.
So just worried how to make her mood positive to drink milk so that if she doesnt take food properly, atleast she can have milk.
Thanks again for your response

Hi,
First of all thanks to you both.
As you said she is not liking to sleep on the legs and eat any food. So now a days Iam trying giving her finger foods like Grapes, Biscuits, Dosa, Chapathi. When she has the mood to eat, she is eating, if not just leaving the plate like that. How about making her to drink milk?
I am giving her Digestion tonic too.I liked your suggestions a lot.
Thanks again
Kranthi
