Do you think advertising has become intrusive in our daily lives? Do you believe advertising is an elitist industry where only a few get in? Do you think advertising can be a lucrative field today for a graduate?

Subject:  Visualising skills for copywriting

Does a candidate for a copywriter' s job require to have any visualising skills or knowledge of designing, ability to use designing software etc?

If not, does it carry weight as an additional skill?

The visual appeal of an ad, and its text need to complement and support each other. In this context, a copy writer who understands design or is good at visualising will be at a definete advantage.

Personally I think its an added advantage. This is because you will have an understanding of what the design software is capable of doing. You will be able to factor this into your ideas for execution.

Subject:  Copy writing for MBAs

Why does copy writing pay such a pittance to freshers. Even post graduates? People like MBAs can hope to earn the kind of salaries that make their MBA worthwhile only if the field of client servicing. But there are some talented MBAs who are not only creative but can synergise strategy into the creative output who abstain from the field because agencies aren' t willing to pay them their dues. This is paradoxical especially when most ad honchos are calling for a raise in the average pay package being offered to most MBAs. Comments?

Nice article. But it should have thrown light on the way the advertising world works. For anyone who wants to make a mark in this industry, be warned of the possible perils and pitfalls. People can be ruthless. If you don' t deliver, you had it. People shout at you at the top of their voices. You need to be extremely strong to take the criticism in the right way. When you do perform, the sky' s the limit. The initial salaries are a pittance but good performers can earn a lot in this industry. But let me tell you, the good things outweigh the bad. The absolute freedom that a copywriter gets is phenomenal. The life is glamorous. You get to meet some of the brightest minds. I would discourage any one, however, to join this industry looking at the glamour. At the end of the day, it' s sheer hard work that will pay. Late nights, crazy schedules, problematic client servicing people, are you ready for all that?

I´ m a copywriter myself, and I couldn´ t agree more with you. You have put it very well.. Advertising is a ruthless world. But the excitement of working in an advertising company is far better than working in, say, a software company as a technical writer. Probably only media compares to this industry.

Cyrus,
Anyone can be a copywriter if he has a flair for words. Copywriting is not rocket science. But good observation skills, use of the right words, the ability to understand and deliver campaigns is part of the job. Maybe you should drop your cv at the top advertising agencies in your city and see if they think you´ re good... Before you go, try taking a product, and creating concepts and ad campaigns for it. This would be good practice. My friend was given a peppermint product and was told to create a campaign with punchline. Lateral thinking is necessary in the ad world.
