Tips for Dealing with Feeding Problems

Tips for Dealing with Feeding Problems

Parents of kids of all ages cope with feeding problems. Have a quick look the common feeding problems and tips for dealing with them.

Kids are the loveliest beings on earth. But when it comes to having meals, children seem to create quite a number of problems for parents. As a result, it becomes very difficult for parents to provide the adequate amount of nutrition that a child’s developing body entails. At other times due to inexperience, mothers find it very difficult to feed their child in a proper manner. The following sections contain the most common problems faced by mothers when feeding their children and their appropriate solutions.

Appropriate Positioning of Infants during Breastfeeding

Mothers of new born babies find it extremely difficult to get their respective children into the best position while breastfeeding. This happens because during the first few weeks after the baby is born, the breasts of the mother become filled with milk which in turn makes them quite hard. Contrarily, the nipples become soft and there is practically nothing to which the infant can attach to while feeding.
Women can deal with this problem by placing the head of their babies in the same level as that of their nipples. Other solutions include the use of hand or electric pumps by virtue of which, mothers can express milk and feed their babies as and when the baby expresses hunger.

Making Infants Love their Meals

Often, toddlers begin to hate the same dishes which they once relished. According to many paediatricians this is not unusual, as the same behaviour is displayed by a majority of adults when they are made to have the same food daily. It is also important for parents to remember that kids do not reject their meals with an intention to irritate them. Sometimes problems like teething or illness may affect food habits of children. Thus, if children are provided a good amount of healthy foods, parents must not be worried about their appetite.

Making Children have Novel Food Items

Children, especially toddlers express disgust when made to taste new dishes. Although no one knows the specific reason behind this, some paediatricians consider “Neophobia” as one of the probable reasons.
Neophobia is the fear of experiencing anything new. So, often times you may find infants rejecting slightly different preparations of vegetables although they are quite cool with the regular chicken dish that you prepare for them. The best way to do away with such a problem is to make your kid try at least one tablespoon of the new item that you would like him or her to have during the earlier part of the day when they are brimming with enthusiasm.

The Best Time to Let your Baby Have His Own Meal

Most paediatricians feel that the earlier you allow your baby to feed himself, the better for him. You can start by handing him a plastic spoon when you begin to feed him solids. Within a year, your baby shall be able to have sips of water or syrup with the help of the spoon. You can also hand him a baby fork when he becomes slightly older. But, be apprised of the fact that kids may not be able to consume considerable amount of food or water during the first few months. They may create a mess each time you hand him or her spoon or fork.

Getting Infants to Have Their Own Meals

Sometimes, kids who are 3-4 years old do not want to consume their own meals. A possible solution to this problem could be to feed them when the whole family sits to have lunch or dinner. Since adults have food by themselves, infants could make an attempt to imitate them.
The only good news about all the listed feeding problems is that toddlers tend to have food according to their desire when left to themselves. However, for some specific reason at times some children do not take the desired quantity of foods. In such cases, it is best to consult a paediatrician to be acquainted of the child’s growth and food habits.

What are the common feeding problems observed by parents? How can parents deal with feeding problems? How to make children eat their meals on their own? Discuss here.
