Burping the Baby

Burping the Baby

It is important to burp the baby after feeding her to avoid discomforts that can be caused due to trapped air. Read on to know more.

Most of the time parents understand the reason for baby’s crying, but sometimes this may not be so. A baby may be feeling discomfort, because the air trapped in her system. Burping the baby after every feed will ease the baby and expel swallowed air. Some precautions should be taken to prevent the baby from swallowing air.

Why is my baby crying, is she hungry?

Most of the time that the baby is crying is because of hunger. Some parents begin to recognize the cry of hunger at a very early age. It has been observed that the feeling of a full stomach gives a baby the most comfort, not the act of feeding, swallowing or being held. However, it is important that you should burp the baby (take out excess air) after every feed, because the air trapped in her system may cause her a lot of discomfort. Another possible explanation for your baby's discomfort may lie in her diet. Occasionally, allergy or sensitivity to something in the formula or breastmilk may lead to crying, but this is usually accompanied by other symptoms.

How do I burp my baby?

Babies often feel uncomfortable because they have swallowed air. Burp the baby regularly during feeds in order to expel swallowed air. Applying light pressure to the baby's abdomen (by laying her across your lap, tummy down or upright against your shoulder) while patting or rubbing her back has also been known to be effective. When you are breastfeeding your baby, you can hold the baby against your shoulder for 30 seconds to one minute before offering her the second breast.

How can I prevent my baby from swallowing air?

Parents can take a few precautionary measures to prevent the baby from swallowing air. Babies will swallow less air if you keep them upright as much as possible during feeding and burping. The right-size teat hole on a bottle will also reduce air intake. If you are breastfeeding the baby, you should position them in a semi-upright position.

Why is it necessary to burp the babies?

Air is trapped in the system of babies when they swallow it while they are being breastfed or bottle-fed. The chances of air getting trapped in the system of babies and causing discomfort to them are higher in bottle-fed babies as compared to the breastfed babies. Bottle-fed babies tend to gulp down the milk faster than breastfed babies and therefore are more likely to cope with the problem of trapped air. Babies whose mothers produce excessive milk also tend to suffer with such issues.
Another factor that may cause trapping of air in baby’s system is digestion issues. Some foods that are fed to babies or that are passed on by mothers to them while breastfeeding can be broken down into gas by bacteria in the large intestine. Foods with high carbohydrate content are suspected to cause gas in stomach.
Babies may also be intolerant to certain foods which are passed on to them through their mother’s milk or certain contents of the formula milk. Baby’s body may show reaction to such foods through creation of gas.
So, parents must help the babies deal with the discomfort caused due to trapped gas by burping them after every feed.

Which are the best positions for burping the baby?

Holding the baby over the shoulder or sitting her on the lap after the feeds are two of the best positions for burping the baby. When you hold your baby over your shoulder for burping her, make sure that her head is well supported and gently rub her back with your another hand. You can also rub her back while sitting her comfortably on your lap to help her burp.
Your baby may also spit-up some of the milk while she is burping. Therefore, make sure that you keep a burp-cloth handy to wipe her mouth.
