Am I Producing Enough Breast Milk

New mothers have so many doubts lingering in their minds regarding the feeding of the baby. They are  concerned whether they are producing enough milk to satisfy the baby’s hunger. They also have many other worries. Here we have answered some common queries associated with breast feeding.

My breasts are still very small. Will my baby get enough milk

This is just an old wives' tale with no basis in truth. The size or shape of your breasts has nothing to do with the quality or quantity of milk dispensed. Milk glands in all women are in the back part of the breasts, behind the areola. Their location is the same, regardless of the size of the mother's breasts.

I have inverted nipples, how do I breastfeed

If your nipples are inverted, your breasts may need to be primed (you can do this even before delivery) for feeding. Breast shells or a manual breast pump is the best way to pull out inverted nipples. If you are doing this before delivery and are a high risk candidate for premature delivery, you need to be careful that the pump does not stimulate uterine contractions.

Am I getting enough milk

The more your baby suckles the greater the production of milk.  Many mothers complain that they are not getting enough milk.  This is just not possible.  If the baby is suckling correctly, the more she empties the breast, the greater is the quantity of milk produced.

Can twins or premature babies also be fed adequately on breast milk

Frequent suckling can provide enough milk for two babies.  The best course to follow is to let one baby have breast milk from one breast and the other baby feed from the other breast. The benefits of breast milk for premature babies cannot be stressed enough.  Premature babies who can swallow but not suckle should be given expressed breast milk in a cup.

Is there any drug that can increase milk supply?

Frequent suckling in combination with the avoidance of bottle-feeding, increases the production of milk. While there are some drugs like Perinorm that may help increase the milk supply, the natural method of frequent breastfeeding is preferable. However, the purpose will be defeated if the baby is being bottle-fed at the same time.

When you feed more breast milk increases, apart from this consumption of non veg especially fish, cheese, milk, groundnuts, bread, rusk also increases breast milk.

to increase my milk supply i have found the following works - drink lots of water, limit tea & coffee intake & drink lots of water after a tea or coffee. herbal stuff like blessed thistle & fenugreek capsules worked for my first baby, this time ginger bear & icecream has improved the quantity.(has to have real ginger in it) but my asian friend reckons ginger soup or strong ginger tea works well too. also on average a baby needs 75ml of milk per pound of body weight(450grams)in a 24 hour period.eg if you have a 4.1kg baby& you feed him 8 times in a 24hour period(every 3 hours) you should hope to produce at least 85.4 ml of milk per feed (note thos is usually from both breasts combined)

every month you will notice a change in milk quantity the baby gets on a more regular schedule with feedings,as long as the baby is nursing exclusively you will not lose your milk supply.if the baby is also taking formula, than your body will only produce enough breast milk on what the baby is taking from you.

hi all, i have a son of 6 months, he is totally breastfed, my personal experience is that preparing to have a good milk flow not just milk flow but also of good quality of milk starts right from when one is pregnant. which means having a balanced diet. drinking lots of fluid has helped me a lot. in the begining till my son was 4 months he was feeding after every 2 hrs now he feeds after evry 4 hrs and he is putting on weight alright. cheers swats

i've got the same problem as amisha. my babies (twins) are 3+ months now. i's resorted to a combination of breastfeeds and bottle feeds right from day one. my son wasn't sucking properly until he was a month old. i've started working again and feed them only once at night. is there any way to increase the milk supply? i would ideally like to breastfeed them - at least at night.

to both of you. the way to increase your supply is to increase the number of feeds you are giving your infant. breastfeeding works on a demand/supply basis, like turning on a tap/fawcett. the more you increase the feeds the more milk will come. honest.
