Treatments for Autism in Children

Autism treatment if started early can help an autistic child to lead a normal life. Early autism treatments show a marked improvement in the behavioural patterns of an autistic child. The treatment options for autism takes into account the medication, family counselling and therapy sessions. Read on to know the various treatment options for autism in children.

Autism has become a commonly known disorder in children today. Autism causes the child to watch and feel the world in a very different manner than others. Autistic children face social and communication problems. They cannot express their feelings clearly and fail to interact with people around. They are very confined and find it very tough in communicating to people without special help. Autism does not let these children connect with one’s feelings of happiness, sadness and other emotions.
These children are hypo and hyper sensitive to sound, light and touch which may appear very normal to us. Autism affects the overall development of the child causing it to have an unfulfilled life. We all wonder if this disorder can be cured. Wish that these innocent little children enjoy and experience their life like the other kids. But, there is no such agreed cure for autism.

However, some behavioural interventions and therapies can help in treating some of the particular symptoms of autism bringing rapid improvements in the child. Health experts believe that treating autism at an early age can bring massive improvements in the child. The combination of therapies and behavioural interventions aim at treating the main signs of autism like impaired communication skills i.e. verbal and non-verbal communication, social interaction, obsessive interests and repetitive behaviour. For treating autism there are world-wide early intervention programmes for autistic children. Here are the following treatment options:

Treatments for Autism in Children

Have a quick look at autism in children.

Medications

Doctors prescribe medicines to autistic people for some of the specific symptoms. For seizures, doctors prescribe either one or more anticonvulsant drugs. Autistic children having hyperactivity or impulsivity problems are prescribed with stimulant drugs in order to reduce them. For depression or obsessive-compulsive disorder, antidepressants are prescribed. Behavioural problems are one of the major symptoms of autism hence, doctors prescribe anti-psychotic medications to treat them.

Behavioural Interventions

Under this treatment programme, children having autism undergo training sessions. These training sessions are highly-structured and conducted by skilled experts. Speech, occupational and physical trainings are included in the therapies. Here the child builds up on his social skills and language abilities. Therapists help the child learn language by showing them pictures or sign language. Most of the children understand and know the words by merely seeing them. For developing social skills, they are thought how to greet people.

Family Counselling

Families of autistic children are also recommended to take counselling sessions as it is not easy to cope up with the challenges of living with an autistic child. Counselling sessions help the families to interact and understand the autistic child. Parents, siblings and other caretakers can take counselling sessions.

Other Therapies

There are other therapies and interventions too for treating autism in children. However, parents have to be very cautious before taking up these therapies as they may be supported by renowned medical health organisations.
These are some of the treatments prescribed for autistic children. Early treatment can obtain good results.

How is it to Live with Autism?

Children having autism have an impaired development cycle. Children having mild or less severe autism can live their life on their own in future but those with severe autism symptoms face a lot of difficulties and will always require special help. Good support and understanding of parents, friends, family and doctors can help the child live a happy life.

To all the parents struggling with an autistic kid in searching for a best and result oriented treatment plan,
My kid was diagnosed for autism in his 16th month. Initially he had no eye contact, non-verbal, not understanding, had repetitive behavior and no concentration and he always used to wander.
After his diagnosis with the help of therapist he had made good progress. I would like to share few tips to all the parents out there on what helped him in my page. Please check it out.
