I have a friend who's wife is expecting a baby in September. This is his first baby and he is so excited. It is a boy. I would like to make him a baby quilt, but I cannot find any references to baby quilts being part of India Culture. Can you help? Is a baby quilt an appropriate gift? What types of fabric do you use?

I am going to have my godh bharanu ceremony, but in the ceremony once the lap was filed and then you would return it back to the number of times you are pregnant, but there is a significance of not dropping the rice that is filled in your lap. What does it mean if you did drop the rice?

Teresa - you aren't in a position the give a traditional Indian babys shower as you are not the girl's mother or mother-in-law. Though I am sure she would not mind having a second American baby shower for fun. We are having two, one traditional one his mother will host and one for us with our American, Indian, and all other friends - as we have friends from all over the world. Good Luck.

I am white and married to a wonderful Gujarati man. I have lasted just fine. Please remember we are all individuals no matter where we were originally from. My Srimantham will be hosted my by mother in law. These things seem to vary from state to state and town to town. It is nice to see a forum on this subject for reference since there is such variety and little literature on the subject as compared to weddings. Jai Shree Krishna.

I'm finally having my babies...but no one want to hold the shower! Who "should" want to hold it? I have been told that it's generally your inlaws that are excited and want to do this? Is the ceremony a blessing for the babies?

I am close to my due date. My parents are Bengali, my husband is Kashmiri - we are Hindu. We had both a Godh Barai (in-law side) and a Bengali 'shaadh' (my mother's wish). Effectively, the sentiments are the same. They are blessings for the mother-to-be. The difference is simply in the ritual carried out. The Godh Barai was a blessing using fruits, given to the mother (I also dressed up quite nicely in a wedding sari I had). The shaadh was a little less fanfare, but still involved dressing up and being blessed by friends and elders using 5 traditional puja items and putting vermillion on the mother-to-be. These exact rituals vary as we assimilate....but effectively are the same idea. Depends on how traditional you want to be.

Hi BS Patel. I have had a similar situation, but if I were you, I wouldn't look at your "predicament" along the lines of what you are or aren't "obligated" to do. If, as you say, you and your husband share the same faith, remember that the Gujarati ceremony for the child is just that...a ceremony. Participating in the ceremony makes you no less Hindu as being sprinkled makes you Catholic. You know as well as I do that it is not the act, but what is in the heart. His family will be your family for your entire lives. Look at this ceremony as another educational and CULTURAL experience. It is an expression of love for your child...how can this be bad? As for your "comfort" with the ceremony, you must remember that you married outside your culture, and there will be things that arise that will be outside your comfort zone. This is who your husband is. I think you should go with it and be grateful for all of the many exciting things your child will be exposed to throughout his or her life. Do you plan to keep your child from learning anything about his Indian heritage? You can teach your child to the best of your ability, but ultimately, you will leave the fate (and faith) of your child in God's hands. Make your family happy and enjoy the experience yourself. You won't regret it, though you might if you refuse the ceremony.

This is very similar to the gujarati "Shrimant" vidhi...!! My ceremony was performed a couple weeks ago and it was really grand. Someone had asked a question as to if a lady who has miscarried can perform the godbharai. As far as I know, it is not advisable. Find a married woman from in-law side of mother-to-be who has kids and has never had a miscarriage. That is the prerequisite.

In Tamil Nadu, where I am from, the function is called "Valai kappu". In the main part of the ceremony the mother to be is adorned with colorful bangles. All invitees are presented with bangles and other gifts. Usually there is a big feast for all invitees including men.

India is a large country with cutoms varying from each region. My 7th month funtion "Srimantham" was quite different although equally as grand. The main difference is that it was hosted by my mother only. The in-laws are just guests. However, we all had fun and I felt truly blessed.
