I am in India and had my first delivery through a C-section due to hypertension during the delivery time. I had no other complications apart from this. I would like to know whether a normal delivery is possible this time if everything goes on fine. My due is only in Feb which will be almost 3 years after my first delivery.

thanx for a wonderful site.Aged 30 and I had two c-sections. Don't really know why? Gyne is very hasty. With my second child I told him that I wanted normal birth and he wanted to induce me immediately and I said no. I felt that I should wait it out. At my next appointment I was given an ultimatum. The same week my son was born via c-section.I'm very disappointed. I love both my children dearly, but still know I could have given normal birth.Does anyone know of any doctors based in cape town that would allow me to give normal birth at least a try and not rush me.I truly felt and still feel that I can do it as I eat healthy and is very active in sportsand good health.

I an 26 yrs.I have four children. My first daughter born vaginally with no problems.two yrs after that my son born due to induction but other than that no intervention was made. One year after that I had a miscarrige at ten wks.One yr and one day exactly after that i was induced and had a healthy girl. Two yrs later in 2007, I had an emergency c section.during my pregnancy with that baby I had alot of discomfort that I hadnt felt in my other pregnancies.A section was one of my biggest fears n the other being my husband not allowd in - which of course he wasnt bcos it was an emergency section. My contractions were completely different n I tried to breather them away but it didnt work.I asked for an epidural, but in the end my son Barry (now 8 mths) wasnt breathing and the docs had to interviene.I was put to sleep and woke up at 8.20 pm in recovery room with no baby nearby. He had been taken to the Special care unit as he had problems with his blood sugar levels.5 days later he was allowed in to my room in hosp and we got home two days after.two wks after getting home he got a virus called RSV,which caused his lung to collapse. He had a little plug of mucus in his chest n when they cleared it away he was ok again.we weaned him off oxygen n eventually got him home.He has been bak to hosp once since but wasnt kept in thankfully. When he gets a cold or virus he gets it quite bad. They say if i ahve any more children I may die.But I am so thankful to all the hospital staff anf ambulance men etc who helped me n Barrie and I think thay do a wonderful job.And I would advise mums only to have a section if nessecary n not just to opt bcos it sounds easier.Believee me it is not.Iam still recovering.Bleeding here n there, sore stomach alot, bad period pains. These people at the hospital really are exceptional. - crosshouse maternity unit - thankyou for all your help.I am eternally grateful.xxx

After going through years of praying for a baby. I finally chose to adopt, Question does that make me less of woman, less of a mother.. I went through many of lifes experience with each of my 3 children, along with their baggage from the past, The hurtful past that ached my heart because i could not take it away. After 15 years I was blessed with my own child. Yes, the bond is instant. as soon as I seen the positive on the test.. I was bonded with my baby.. and her with me.. I unlike some of you, was demading c section.. I did not have an easy pregnancy. I was in tears every doc visit, which was nearly 3 times a week. My whole thought was I am not going through this whole pregnancy keeping me and my baby alive, to have her damaged at child birth. The doctors faught me, and I won. The bottom line, is it is my life, and my baby and they cannot force me to go through hours or days of agony. yes, they cleaned up my baby, and gave her to my husband.. I laid there and held her hand, and kissed her, and she was so tiny and beautiful, then it happened, I kept hearing a doctor say we cut to low, them asking me over and over again if i wanted my tubes tied. I started to panic.. and they put me under.. I woke up I immediately was given my beautiful baby girl, healthy, with tears of joy.. reguardless of the heartache of passed miscarriages, reguardless of the hell i went through with the pregnancy.. I was complete, here in my arms I held the most blessed miracle i could ever imagine.. I dont think it made me less of a woman, or less than mother.. I bonded with my baby the moment i knew she was there. She is now 5 months old, and just perfect.. THANK GOD..

firstly i am very much satisfied with this site.i had an emergency c-section about a year ago when my son was born.i was ahealthy person all over my pregnancy.dont know what happened at the last moment.i had my derlivery in india.the doctors gave me many reasons for undergoing c-section,baby weighd 4kg,uterus opend very slowly etc.i experienced the first stage of labor that is contraction.it lasted for 15 hrs.so i felt very sad for having a cs.anyway i ve got very nice baby, and i forget all the pains i have undergone when i see his face.but i am also in the opinion that cs should be done only at ermergency.we should not choose a cs when vaginal birth ius possible.we should really experience the natural way.i geard that cs are done very rare at gulf.now i really regret for having my deivery at india.i pray with all my heart to have a mnormal next time, thank u

After 36 hours of labor my first child was a C/S- I healed successfully - atleast physically. 3 years later I had a VBAC & that was the best experience of my life- though I was in labor for 42 hours & pushed for 6 & had a 4th degree tear- I would not trade this experience for nothing in the world- you truely don't know what it feels like to be a mother until yo push your child into the world.- 3 months ago I delivered my last child and after months of fighting for a VBAC- Iwas forced into a c/s.- for that I will never forgive the docs & am currently seeking legal advice- your bond with a vaginally delivered child is not necesarily better but it is different than with that of a c/s baby- go natural if you can it truely is a better experience emotionally.

I hink tha c-sections are done way too often, escpecially in the US. I had a c/s after 27 hours of labor w/ my first son and was not ever given a choice about VBAC. Anyone who thinks a c/s is easy and painless REALLY needs to do more research. There are many more risks for a surgical delivery and the pain of recovery lasts weeks and is very intense. It also makes nursing much more painful and dificult so moms are statistically more likely to quit and just give formula. A c-section also leaves a very ugly scar and a roll of fat that is impossiblt to get rid of because they sew the skin to the muscle so no amount of diet or exercise will ever get rid of it. The only way to ever have a flat tummy again is a tummy uck, but that just leaves a bigger scar and hey are very expensive. Also, when you are forced to have a c/s many, many women feel like a failure, or half a woman and get very depressed, escpecially if they can't nurse because of the pain. I belong to group of ladies on the internet at a site called babycenter and we have all talked about it. SO many of the women hat have had c/s feel a sense of loss and failure. You don't get to hold your baby right away, it's taken away and cleaned up while you are being stitched up. They have proven that the first thirty minutes after birth is the most important time for bonding. Please, if you are given a choice between c/s or vbac, at least try for yours and your baby's sake. I have four children and because of the risks from the scarring and how thin my uterus is I can no longer have children, I have had 5 doctors tell me that o get pregnant again would kill me. I would not make it past 5 months before my uerus ruptured. My last pg was so terrible because of the pain from the previous c/s and the stretching of the scar tissue. I was on bedrest from 24 weeks whith my last 3 pg. A c/s is not easier or painless. Please think about that before opting for one unless it is medically necessary. Good luck to all of you with your families, children are a wonderful blessing. I know this is an odd thing to add, but maybe some of you can understand. Because I can not have anymore children, I will never be able to give my husband the son he wanted so much. Please understand, we love our daughters and don't regret a single one and I know my husband wants me alive more than a son, but it still hurts that I am unable to give him that. If a c/s goes wrong there is a chance for the dr to decide to do a hysterectomy and then YOU may be the one unable to have another child. I would gladly endure 15 hours of labor, ecspecially when there are medicines like epidurals that really make it bearable, to the excruciating pain of having major surgery and being in pain for weeks.

But she said that there is a law at the hospital i will be going to that after 2 c sections, no VBAC. Iam very discouraged, my son will be over 2 when i deliver and i want to try vaginally. I just wanted to know really what dangers would i face? Either way i want a healthy baby and I know to follow the doctors orders!! lol. If anyone can comment thatd be nice. I would like to make a comment on Ersin comments about having a baby in Cyprus, C Section, it is very true that in Cyprus that they give more c sections to pregnant women and sometimes without choice I think they make an excuse things are wrong with birth and you have to have a c section, a friend of mine last week had a baby , they left her 15 Hours without any pain releif in the end she agreed to have c section this was although all through her pregnancy she told them constantly she wanted a natural birth, I am also pregnant in Cyprus with mt first shild and are very enoyed at this procedure and am worried I wont be able to have it naturally, cypriot women seem to prefer it less pushing and pain. I will like to point out that this procedure is pushed in private hospitals its around £1000 for a natural birth plus extra for tests, and £1.500 for c section plus tests, as for the general hospitals which you are limited to 1 per town are so discusting you would not want to have a baby in such a grubby hospital, these hospitals treatment is free. and if you go you can see why .

When I had my last child I had a C-section. Her head wasn't down and when they turned it they push really hard and it hurts. They only got her head to the side and I told them she was my last and I didn't want her hurt so to do a C-section. They gave me a eperdirmal and if they get it in the right area it won't hurt at all. I had two of them. One was with another birth. As for the C-section it doesn't hurt when you are numb when the medicine wears off and you move around don't make any sudden movements move slow and it won't hurt as much. I made a sudden movement by accident and I was instantly in severe pain that I asked for some painkillers. You all will do fine if you haven't had one. I did it will take time for you to heal over but when you have your baby and see him/her it is all worth it and you will swear never to have one again but you do because you love them so much. I did with my second one I wasn't going to have anymore and I went on to have two more. My son died when he was 3 years two months and 5 days old but I have three beautiful girls and anything is worth the pain of having kids.

I had a C section a month ago basically because my baby was breech (head up position). At first, I was really worried about the risks and specially the epidural. However, everything happened so quickly that I didnt feel any major pain during the procedure. I remenber reading a lot abou breech deliveries and c setions and I now realize that I was over worried. In my opinion, the most dificult part of it is the recovery. I pain in the stitches and couldnt walk for two days and needed help even to get up from my bed. I was told that I would have cramps and be bleeding for six weeks and I still feel the pain however the bleeding stoped at week 3 I wonder if I should worry about it what do you think about me bleeding only during three weeks? is it normal? By the way I m proud of being a mon now the pain I felt is nothing compared with it.

hi every one i have gone through this article while searching for some academic information about anaesthesia for caesarean section, i read one sentence-'caesarean sections are usually done under general anaesthesia'. having been trained in anaesthetics in india and getting the training in the uk, i can tell that most of the caesarian sections in both the countries are done under spinal/epidural anaesthesia. there is a constant effort from both the obstreticians and the anaesthetists to increase the number of mothers who unfortunately have to undergo c-section for the delivery of their precious baby to go for the spinal/epidural anaesthesia than for the general. as this is a very useful website for the would be parents to welcome their baby, i would suggest the organizers of this website to change this aspect of the article. all the best to all the would be mums

Last August 23, I underwent C-section because it's impossible for my 8.91 lbs. baby (my 3rd) to be delivered via vaginal birth. After the operation was the toughest part. It's impossible to move, sideways or anyway. I felt like a log for a day and a half until the doctor told me I'm going to be rid of the catheter and therefore should start moving and getting up. How in the world would one move when my stitches hurt like the dickens? Now, after two weeks, I still cannot get a decent bath on my own because it still hurts. This will be the first and last C-section I'm going to have...no more!!!

I would like to draw your attention to the situation concerning childbirth in Cyprus. C-sections seem to be the most common form of childbirth in Cyprus. Women are being given c-sections in private clinics just so that the doctors can save time and obviously get more money. I feel that it’s unfair for expectant mothers to be fooled into having a C-section when they are not even given the opportunity to give birth naturally. C-sections should be given in cases of emergency only.

I too have had 2 c-sections and I am scheduled for another one in 4 days. The first was due to failure to progress. The second was by choice. Both my experiances were not that bad. The first was the worst because I had not ever had a surgery till then. The hardest part was walking. The second time around was so much easier. I was up and moving in 8 hrs. The pain was controlled by pills for 2 days and then I was fine. I hope this time goes as smooth or even smoother. Although like a lot of people on this site, I too am scared for the surgery even though i have been through it 2 times for children and 2 other times. I don't think you ever get used to it. Good site Thanks for reading my views.

I've had 2 C-sections and will have another in 10 days. The 1st one was done in an older hospital with an older doctor almost 9 years ago and an epidural was administered. While the procedure was painless and took about 30 minutes, the recovery was painful. I couldn't sit up or walk for 2 days. The 2nd c-section was done in a newer hospital with a younger doctor and I was given the option of an epidural or a spinal block. I opted for the spinal block because it meant less pain but chance of nausea. Though the administration of the spinal block was painful, the rest of the procedure was painless. My recovery was quicker and I was able to get out of bed and walk around within 24 hours. I did however get very nauseous which in comparison to the pain I had during the 1st c-section is not a big deal.

Hi, I have had 2 previous c-sections and and due for my 3rd one in 9 weeks. My first c-section I was in lots of pain they put me to sleep and took my daughter out. I had her by emergency c-section. The hospitial did not give me no pain medication, they said only over the counter meds. So for 5 days I was in pain . But with my second child, I webt to a different hospital, they gave me a spinal I also had percasate meds, and the pain was home in 4 days. But my scar got infected but thats cause I am overweight and the stupid clinic didn't let me take the staples out on time. I went to a private doctor this time and hoping my third and last c-section will be ok and I am so scared of death cause people have told me cause I am overweight my uterus can burst and I can die at childbirth. Well, its too late to change my mind now.

Hi, I want to begin by congratulating this website. It is fantastic and provides all the information a pregnant woman or a new mother would like to receive. But what I cannot inagine is that there are women who inspit of existing in such a hing technological time still dread the fact that they cannot have theri baby in a natural way and its like a sin or a crime to go through a C-Section? It is unbelievable that women can actually think that just because they were unable to have their babies natutally, they will love their babies lesser or feel lower!! What a disgusting thought. Why would a doctor perform a C-Section? Just for the reason that the mother & baby are safe and healthy, so that if they baby or the mother is going through stress or the placenta is dipping, or the BP goes high/low or a woman just cannot dialate...these are the reasons why a C-Sec is performed. And there is no harm in this procedure. Infact it is so much safer. I had a C-Sec 2.5 yrs back and am expecting my second one next month. In the 1st delivery, I was unnable to dialate more than 3cms and it was best decided by the doctor that a C-Sec is performed and it was very smooth. I did feel uncomfortable with the glucose drips etc for a day or so but I did not let myself feel like a failure! Please No! I gave a birth to a beautiful baby and was proud of that. I just made it a point to be extra careful post-delivery and looked after my stitches and took utmost care to get better and stronger each day. After 3 months I was exercising and jumping around my baby! So what is the big deal? This time around, i am prepared for both. If the labour takes place on its own and I dialate etc then hopefully it will be a natural birth, if not then once again i will opt for a C-Sec. Wishing you all the very best for a healthy baby and a fantastic delivery.

I am the proud mother of six children ranging in the ages from 17 to 4, my 17 year old son was delivered by c-section, but my next five children were all deliveredy vbac. I must say that my experience with the c-section is what partially led me to want to deliver natural with my other children and trust me my natural birth experience involved alot of hours in labor, but I would still choose natural over c-section anyday. I would highly suggest to anyone to discuss with the doctor the possibilities of delivering natural after a c-section, it can be done and it is such a beautiful experience. Take care.

I have had three c-sections this will be my fourth. My pain tolerance gets weaker with every c-section.Every c-section I've had has been for a very good reason.I was pushing to have my first baby and the cord prolapsed and I had to have an emergency c-setion. When I went to have my second baby my placenta abrupted and the Dr. had to take her 5wks. early. When I went to have my third baby I started having abdominal pains and the Dr. thought my placenta was abrupting again. The Dr. did a amniocentesis test to see if the lungs were mature so he could take her and he could hardly find any fluid to draw,so he gave me four shots of steroids and took her the next day. So as you can see I've had some excitement with every child. I Thank God I've got three healthy girls :6yrs old she was a day late(8lbs.9oz.)5yrs old she was 5wks.early(6lbs.6oz.)2yrs old she was 2wks early(8lbs.3oz.) I pray to God he's watching over us when I have this baby and that everything will be okay and the baby is healthy.

FIRST OF ALL, I HAVE TO SAY THIS IS A GREAT WEBSITE! I HAD A C-SECTION 8 YEARS AGO BECAUSE MY SON WAS BREECH. I AM NOW 5.5 MONTHS PREGNANT AND GOING FOR VBAC. I AM SCHEDULED FOR A C-SECTION A FEW DAYS WITHING MY DUEDATE JUST BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT MY OB DOES. IF I GO INTO LABOR BEFORE THIS SCHEDULED DATE THEN I AM GOING TO TRY TO DELIVER VAGINALLY. IF NO LABOR STARTS THEN I WILL HAVE MY SECTION ON THE SCHEDULED DATE. MY FIRST SECTION WAS GREAT EXCEPT FOR RECOVERY--I WAS LAID UP WITH A REALLY BAD INFECTION. BUT THEY KEEP ASSURING ME THIS ODDS OF THIS HAPPENING AGAIN ARE LOW. BUT I'M STILL SCARED! HOWEVER, I'M PROBABLY JUST AS SCARED AS THINKING ABOUT DELIVERING VAGINALLY!! SO WISH ME LUCK. REMEMBER IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW YOU BRING YOU BABY INTO THIS WORLD AS LONG AS HE/SHE IS HEALTHY.

HI,EVERYONE THAT'S READING. I'VE HAD A REALLY BAD EXPERIENCE WITHAN EMERGENCY C-SECTION DUE TO HAVING MY SON 14YRS AGO WHEN A CALL IN DOCTOR AT THE HOSPITAL REMOVE THE STAPLES OUT MUCH TO SOON AND INFECTION BEGAN UNTIL MY MOTHER AND I NOTIFIED THE NURSE THAT I WAS BLEEDING. THE NURSE NOTIFIED THE DOCTOR RIGHT AWAY & THEY BEGAN TO DRAIN THE CUT WITH PEROXIDE AND I SCREAMED, I'VE NEVER IN ALL MY LIFE FELT SUCH PAIN. THAT'S ONLY THE BEGINGING THE DOCTOR'S MENTIONED BECAUSE OF THE INFECTION THEY COULD NOT STAPLE OR STITCH MEUP THAT I WOULD HAVE TO HEAL INSIDE OUT. I REALLY BECAME DEPRESSED ,MY NEWBORN BABY WENT HOME WITH MY MOM THAT'S A NURSE AND I LOST ALL APPETITE AND HAD A FEVER TO ADD. EVENTUALLY EVERYTHING TURNED OUT OKAY, BUT HERE I AM AGAIN EXCEPT I HAVE A NEW MARRIAGE AND I JUST FOUND OUT WE'RE HAVING TWIN BOYS AND YES I MUST HAVE A C-SECTION AGAIN AND NOT BY MY CHOICE. I'M PRAYING THAT EVERYTHING GOES WELL AND A SPEEDY RECOVERY. HOPEFULLY THERE ARE BETTER EXPERIENCES THAN WHAT I'VE ENDURE. SHERRY!!!!

This site has made me feel very much at ease especially when it came to making my decision about another c section. I feel lucky that i have the choice on how to deliver my baby but i feel even luckier to be sitting here 7 months pregnant . After having a c section 7 yrs ago due to a posterior baby and a possible problem with my pelvis . It has taken me 5 yrs to be pregnant again and i have so many worries about the pregnancy and birth that i do not wish to take any chances id rather opt for a c section than put my body through labour and risks especially that i think id probably end up having another c section anyway. I just want my baby to arrive here in the world safely where ill be waiting with a great big smile and a whole lot of love just for him . Im not worried about the after affects of the operation iv done it once and i can do it again its not the end of the world but the start of something beautiful andf thats the birth of my baby . If I had the choice and knew that my pelvis was 100% and that i knew my baby could make it through naturally i would opt for a vaginal birth but since none of this is guaranteed and iv waited years for this baby i refuse to have a trial of labour as now io want to enjoy the rest of my pregnancy knowing we are in the safest hands . please dont feel bad if u need or choose a c section the option and need for it is there for a reason.

I have been reading many variations of "feelings" " fears" and much confusion on what to expect of a Ceserean Section. I myself having had gone through three c-sections over the past 21 years, with 5 and 7 year spans between each child. My children are 21, 16 and 8. Each c-section was slightly different than the first, but all basically the same procedures. Having nearly 10lb babies (all three) and a body that refused to allow 14 inch heads and chests pass through. The c-section procedures themselves are painless. The recovery times vary, depending upon each persons pain tolerance, as well as the healing process of the incision. There are only two ways in this world to extract infants from their mother, vaginal or cesrean section. No woman should ever feel "less" due to the way she has given birth to her children. She is, in every sence GIVING BIRTH! A Vaginal delivery can tend to feelings of accomplishment and "a job well done"...While a ceserean delivery can tend to feelings of "I was wheeled in...numbed from waist down...then handed a baby"....That part is true! But when it comes to "an accomplishment" with a ceserean section, a womans ability to handle pain, and weakness all the while she is caring for her newborn is above and beyond an accomplishment! I have read women stating problems with their incisions...Having had three, all the temporary aches and pains are perfectly normal, unless accompanied by a fever or discharge from the incision. Always call your Dr. with anything you are worried about...That is why you have paid him/her! Numbness in the lower abdomen is "a good thing!" You get used to it, and the inscision itself will usually stay some what numb forever. You actually do become able to lift and carryon as you did before...But for a short while after the procedure, just take it slow, you will heal much faster. Most women aquire something called a "shelf"(tummy pooch)just above the incision...After your 2nd and 3rd c-section, just look at it as your life long friend (unless your blessed with a personal trainer 6 days per week, and a wonderful plastic surgeon!) All the women I have been reading on this site, have good information (some better than others) but, for the most part a personal story can seem to hit home more than the technical reading at the Dr's office. I wish everyone well, and I wish you all the love that is possible with your children, who are gifts that have been given to you no matter the way they are placed in your arms.

I had a c-section with my first child and am scheduled to have another now with my second. With my daughter I was in labor for 36 hours and only progressed to a 3. Of those 36 hours I had the epidural for the last 4. I wanted to deliver naturally but it just seemed that my body wasn't ready for it, so finally they decided to do the c section. It was a relief after all that time and pain, and truthfully I am looking forward to not having to go thru that again...the pain I mean. I don't think that makes me any less of a woman though since I probably wont ever expieriance a natural birth. Each woman is different and each pregnancy is different and I am glad that a c section is an option for me.

I had my first daughter almost 4 yrs ago by c-section after 12 hours of labor and 2 hours of pushing. The Dr. finally decided that my pelvic bone was to small for her to fit through. I am scheduled to have another c-section on Dec. 1 The dr. gave me the option of a VBAC but said that I would most likely ended up having to have a c-section again anyway. The only fear I have about the surgery is the fact that I ended up with a spinal headache after my last c-section but other than that my recovery was pretty easy.

i think cesarean section is of no use becouse the baby who cannot come in to world in natural way is actually showing that it has not the general capacity of life and whit this section we make its soul to live in a weak body its not a section its crime and it will be prooved for next years .

I had 2 c sections one due to HELLP and the second, my child stopped responding or moving. My firt child is 2. My son is 8 months old. I am due with my third in March. This baby will have to be delivered c section. I am scared because my scar does hurt still. But, I had a spinal with both children, and the surgeries went well. Am scared to go under the knife 3 times though. Normal anxieties. People have three C sections all the time. If you can have a natural birth. Spare yourself the recovery time and the surgery. It really does take a toll on your body. But, you really dont feel anything when they are doing the surgery. In my case c sections were the only way to go. Do not be afraid if you have to have a c section. You and your child will be fine. You wont feel a thing. Spinal anesthesia is great. You wont miss a thing. Operating rooms are usually freezing, so after surgery you may be cold. Bring a comforter from home and very warm socks! :-)

I just had a Cesarean Section performed for my last child due to the fact that he was breech. I had delivered all four of my other children using natural child birth with no epidural or episiotomy. The recovery from the cesarean was dreadful and most unpleasant. I would have much rather had a vaginal birth. The drugs that they gave after the cesarean made me have anxiety which resulted in panic attacks. The pain of labor and natural child birth is worth the results and best of all you can see your child right away, not three hours later.

I just had my 3rd baby by c-section my 1st two where delivered by suction so I was feeling like I couldnt naturally deliver my babies but at least myself and all my 3 children are healthy although I do seem to have been suffering from an upset stomach more often since the operation. Anyone who feels that they want to be under general whilst having a c-section should consider that the father will not be allowed in the operating theatre so you will both miss the birth which although is different it is still a magical moment that should not be missed. c-section does not make u less of a woman but you are better off if u can have them natural, so if it is a choise and u are choosing c-section u need to think again, i have had 3 and i would have loved the chance to get up and go home the next day after having my children instead of having someone trying to help me walk and go to the restroom because i layed in labor for 36 hrs and never dialed and my daughter went into fetal-distress, she spent her 1st 5 hrs in the world without me because we had a really bad dr and i had to be put to sleep due to surgery complications, so if it is an issue of pain, u will forget when u see them smile, just make the decision based on what has to be not what you think is easier. my mom use to say that they were for weak women but when she saw what i went thru she has a hole different point of view/

my first daughter is four years old and after having something called prodromal labor for 3 days i was only dilated to 4 cm and she was large and also turned with her face up causing "back labor" or severe back pain, i was relieved when they asked if i wanted a c section. now i'm 10 weeks pregnant and was worrying about having a second ceserean, which is necessary and will be scheduled. the first was great after all the pain i'd been through, but this time i'll just be going in for an operation. one thing i know this time is that it's important to relax and think about the wonderful gift i will have when it's over. i already know it's well worth the surgery, and reading this site reassured me again. thanks.

I was happy to find this site. I had a baby 17 years ago by vaginal delivery, without anesthesia, and the entire pregnancy/childbirth experience was so traumatic that I can barely write this message. Now, however, I am 36 and engaged to a wonderful man, and am thinking about having another baby if I can do it according to my own choices. This time I am certain, after having done research, and after knowing what it is like to have a regular birth (OK - maybe I'm a wimp, but I can only deal with the facts as they exist), that I want a c-section. The problem is that I live in the United States, and it seems impossible to elect to have a scheduled c-section here. If it can be done at all (hard to do unless you're the wife, sister or best friend of the OB/GYN), it seems that it's done under regional anesthesia. I definitely want to be under **general anesthesia*** at the time. My question is this: does anyone know where I can get a scheduled c-section in the United States? I am willing to travel anywhere in the world to get this done, but I'm hoping it can be done here. If not, do you know of another country where I can go? Specifically, I'd like an address or phone number or website reference so that I can meet with someone as soon as possible. Also, it makes me very sad to hear that women feel bad about themselves for not delivering vaginally. I wish women would know that pregnancy itself is very important, and as long as the baby arrives safely, they should feel very good about themselves. We should support each other in our choices and bravery and self-sacrifice. Mothers should be revered no matter how our children come into the world. After all, we continue to make sacrifices for them our whole lives. After all, some people, after reading the medical studies and weighing the risks, conclude that c-sections are actually a much safer route for the baby, and better for the mother's long-term health, as well. I realize there are exceptions. Sure, things were done differently 100s of years ago, but everything else was different, too. We didn't have the advanced technology that we have now, and not many babies back then were as big as they are now, among other things. Also, have you ever stopped to think of why there's a big push to lower the c-section rate? Hint: it has something to do with insurance companies wanting to save money, and nothing to do with us being allowed autonomy. Why do you think so many obstetricians decide on elective c-sections for themselves? If anyone has any information on where in the world I can get a c-section under general anesthesia, please e-mail me at jennifermarief@yahoo.com. I'd so much appreciate it! Jenny

Heather.... Yes!! I had terrible burning pain. I mean TERRIBLE!!!!!! My water broke 3 times and resealed each time. I was upside down in hospital for 4 months awaiting my twins. UGH!!!!!! After (thank God the twins were delivered safely and came home with me) I had the terrible burning. My GYN wanted to inject novacane shots along my incision because nothing would help and it hurt so bad. I said no way! After 4 months--- I was done. The only thing that later helped me was wet heat. Not a heating pad,-- it had to be wet. I got a kitchen towel wet,-- micowaved it (really hot),- then layed that on my incision site. That pain was better than the burning. I hope this helps-- it is the only thing that did it for me.

I will be having my third c-section in 2 weeks. I tried to deliver vaginally for my first 2 children but there were complications and I had to opt for emergency c-sections with them. I am not looking foward to the third c-section, even though I know what to expect. Some women prefer a c-section, but for me, I really wanted to give birth vaginally because I think that although labour and delivery is hard, it is always better than major surgery. I try to keep a positive perspective on the upcoming surgery though. Although I feel anxious, and a bit down, I try to remember that I have 2 healthy children and my delivery date is set.

I'm currently 25-weeks pregnant and was advised at the birth of my son 5-years ago not to try delivering naturally again. I was induced with my son: prostoglandins against the cervix, waters broken by a hook, oxytocin drip which caused severe and erratic contractions, convulsions... Two and a 1/2 days of this and I was still not dilating so the Drs just turned the oxytocin drip up higher - leading to more convulsions and absolutely severe contractions that jammed on. My epidural was topped up 6 times. It all ended in an emergency theatre. My son was jammed and in feotal distress, but finally he was born - alot of forceps force pulled him into the world and his face was black and blue from it, his eyes swollen closed, his head looked so sore, like he'd been in a boxing round and just battered to bits. One look at him and he stole every part of my heart, til this day I am so fiercly protective of him. The whole process from induction til birth took a little under 72-hours and of course I was not allowed to eat or drink during this time period so was very weak at the delivery, fainting and just not on the planet. I was strongly told to never try and deliver naturally again: the risk to the bay was too high. I am attending the same hospital for this pregnancy and my current Dr told me no caeserian was required this time - that he was sick and tired of delivering Drs telling people with complications such as I had not to try and deliver naturally in the future. I have spent the last 5-years coming to terms with a caeser and now this Dr says no. As far as I am concerned the health of my baby is my absolute priority. And I will elect to have a caeser for this baby's safety, and for that reason only. Any other expecting Mums out there who know they're probably having caeser's too?

I'm now pregnant with my second child & delivered my first by elective caesar due to breech presentation 2 1/2 years ago. This time I had hoped I could deliver naturally just to experience what it was like, and to see if it made a difference to my recovery since I now have another child to lift. However, my OB has strongly advised having another elective caesar purely to avoid the risk of uterine rupture (however low the risk), as it has massive & horrible implications. Not only could I lose the baby but it may ruin the chance of future pregnancies due to the possibility of a full hystorectamy being necessary. So I've made up my mind, I have 9 weeks left and although I'm a bit disappointed, I feel confident I've made the right decision since overall, the method of an elective C-section is the safest. I'm not complaining about my first experience - I was up & walking the second day and had pain killers to ease the pain which I only needed for the first week. There were no complications and I loved my baby 150% from the very beginning. The whole experience was still magical - it is still birth afterall, just a different way. The only reason I wanted to try a vaginal birth was I consider this to be the way nature intended, and I'd love to be up & moving straight away. However, down the track what is 2-3 days of a bit of immobility? My 2 1/2 year old son will cope to stand without Mummy lifting him for the short term! Good luck to you all & don't view C-sections as such a horrible experience - we are still lucky we can deliver babies & have them!

I can only hope that this is available for everyone who has to have a C-section.

Don't let these women fool you, some who are writing have never experienced a vbirth. I've just had my first C-Section and it is awful, never again will I have a child this way. Recover time went from 3 days to over 2 weeks. The pain in your abdomen is bad, it hurts. No driving for up to 2 weeks, this is just not practical if you have other children. Mine was elective and due to the holidays a made the wrong decision - don't get me wrong, it was great to plan and to know when the big day would arrive, but I would trade it all in to be back to normal in a few days. The worst part is the pitocin after you give birth, mother nature steps in on a vbirth, but w/a csection drugs must induce the contracting of the uterus, plan to be knocked out - its the only way to handle the pain.

At first they had broken my water, then given me the epidural, after which I had developed a very bad temperature, during which I was shivering frantically and throwing up. Plus, my cervix woiuld not dilate more than three centimeters. AFter seventeen hours, I was in the ER. The procedure took no more than ten minutes and was completely painless. In fact, I enjoyed it. When the anesthetic effect was gone, the pain was unbearable, but who cares? I was way too exhiliarated to care (did I spell that right?" The pain lasted for about four day. I did not have any infections, blues, depression, I was in fact on top of the world. I did not feel incomplete or abnormal because of the mode of delivery. That is ridiculous. I had carried and nurtured a baby for nine months, just like all other mothers. So why the heck would a C-section mean that I am a failure? My tummy is still a bit large, though it flattened out considerably after birth. I heard that there is nothing you can do to get back to your formal shape except cosmetic surgery. My advice is to buy a special girdle which is worn around the waist to tuck in the tummy. Wear it all the time, even while you are sleeping. Only take it off to shower. My second advice is to perform special post natal exercises designed to reduce your tummy, but this should not be done immediately after birth. Ask your doctor how soon you can begin to exercise. I would like to end with a comment on mother-baby relationship after a C-secion. I gotta admit I could not love my baby very much for the better part of her first year. I treated her with so much love and kindness, but cried constantly for not loving her the way I should. However, after one year, I began to feel the motherly sentiment, and right now I would literally go to the end of the earth to make her the happiest being on earth. I love her so unbearably it hurts. However I don't think that my lack of sentiment is due to the c-section. Oh no. Every first mother experiences this. She is not used to being a mother, and naturally she won't feel this sentiment right away. It can take time to get used to the feeling of being a new mother. Trust me, many women I have spoken to felt the same way, even though they had a natural delivery. But it's okay. My baby did not suffer at all because of it. Right now we're the best of friends (she's one and a half). Therefore, C-section is a perfectly safe procedure, you see, and I highly doubt that a woman can die because of it. Maybe fifty years ago but certainly not today with the formidable technological successes that we have reached in medicine. I pray God day and night that I will never ever have to deliver vaginally. Good luck to you all. Great sit!

Hi I have had both natural with my first son then c-section with my second son and even though the c-section was alright I would go for natural any day and I was in labour for 3 days with my first but with the c-section I was up and walking around at 6.30 the next day and my scar isnt that bad you can hardly see it I had to have a c-section because he was Breech which I was a bit upset about but it wasnt that bad. And I would like to say that the public system brought both my two beautiful boys into the world and I couldnt have faulted them. So if you are having to have a cesarean then dont worry it is very safe and all that matters is that your little bundle of joy comes out safe.

After having delivered my gorgoeus son by C-Section method, I was just so delighted that I had a healthy child. I'm aware that not all deliveries go without problems however after being present at the birth of my two nephews, for which my sister delivered totally "naturally" both times (vaginally), i.e. no pain meds, certainly no epidural, I would definitely advise not having an epidural. I had one without any doubt, but regret it so much as I really feel that it slowed down the whole process leading to a 3 hour period of actually trying to push the baby into the world, but to no avail. This lead to muscle spasms after which the C-Section had to be performed. I blame the whole misfortune on the epidural. My point is that in a lot of the articles I have read, women seem to convey their fear of whether to try for "normal" delivery or C-Section. Do yourself a favour and think seriously about not having an epidural. I know you're probably going to be in a lot more pain initially, however I certainly don't feel that medical persons warn Pregnant women enough about the side effects and inconsistencies with the epidural. Keep in mind that when your labour starts a beautiful little baby (or babies!) is coming at the end of this pain. It's the only pain endured by women that brings with it the most wonderful feeling in the whole world!!!

I have had to have two c-sections because my pelvis is to small to deliver normally. I am now pregnant with my third baby and will have to have a c-section this time too. The only problem I really had was an infection after my 2nd c-section but was treated with anti-biotics and I healed quickly. I do get scared at times thinking that I will have to have yet another c-section. I want to assure all the moms out there that having a c-section DOES NOT affect the bonding with your baby. I am suffering from alot of pressure on my scar during this pregnancy and at times it can be quite painful. There are also times that I feel like I have missed out because I have not been able to deliver vaginally, however, I am just grateful that I have been able to have children at all. Have really enjoyed this site and particularly reading all the other ladies comments.

HI , DURING MY FIRST TIME,I WAS OVERDUE FOR 12 DAYS AND WAS INDUCED WITH PESSARIES LEADING TO EXCRUCIATING ,FALSE PAINS FOR 36 HRS.MY BABY'S HEAD WAS TILTED BACKWARDS,HIS BACK TOWARDS MY BACK AND I WOULDN'T DILATE MORE THAN 6CMS(REQD 10).ULTIMATELY,EMERGENCY CAESARIAN SECTION WAS DONE ,WHICH SEEMED LIKE A MIRACLE AND QUICK PROCEDURE AFTER THOSE LONG PAINFUL HRS .I WAS WALKING NEXT MORNING,CHANGING MY BABY,CARRYING HIM ,AND IN TWO DAYS,WAS BACK HOME,UP THE STAIRS.I WAS CAREFUL WITH STITCHES FOR 2-3 WKS AND DIDN'T CARRY ANY WT EXCEPT FOR THE BABY BUT DEVELOPED SOME INFECTION FOR WHICH ANTIBIOTICS WERE GIVEN TO CURE ME WITHIN A WEEK.NOW I AM 4 MTHS PREGNANT AND WITHOUT DOUBT,AM OPTING FOR CAESARIAN ON REQUEST FINDING IT MUCH MORE EASY TO HANDLE.SOME POST OPERATIVE EXERCISES WERE SUGGESTED WHICH I DID ,BUT UNFORTUNATELY,I DID NOT LOSE WT-THAT COULD BE PARTIALLY GENETIC TOO.I WOULD SUGGEST ALL THE GIRLS GOING FOR C-SECTION NOT TO BE SCARED AT ALL.IF U HV NORMAL NATURAL BIRTH,U R LUCKY,BUT IF NOT,U STILL R LUCKY. BEST WISHES.

Great site, most c-sections in usa not done under general, but epidural or spinal as well as Lori from the USA indicated. I had a C-Section, done on a Tuesday was up and walking Wednesday morning, took a shower on my own and was released on the Friday morning. So recvoer and hospital stays vary. Plus, I was off pain killers by 10am on the Wednesday which was exactly 24 hours after the C Section!

My first child was delivered by C-Section 6 years ago due to foetal distress and I found the experience wonderful - i am now 7 months pregnant with my second child and have been refused a C-Section this time as there was no medical reason why I cannot give birth naturallyn - I am absolutely terrified at the thought of a Vaginal birth - has anyone else been refused in this way and can I insist on having one?

I elected to have a C Section as I was frightenend of natural birth. I was also informed by my Dr that a C section is a relatively low risk to the baby compared to natural. I had a spinal injection which to my surprise was totally painless. The whole operation was quick, painless and proffessionally done. I would not hesitate to do it again. C section gives you some degree of control. It also ensures that your baby will not suffer due to a complicated birth after you have anxiously awaited his/her arrival for so long. Recovery was also short and not too painful. I think C sections are a good option. I think it is very important, if you can at all possibly afford it, to obtain the services of a good private, female Ob at a well respected and well staffed private hospital. I think this makes ALL the difference. Having a baby in the public system can be dangerous due to staffing levels.

first of all I would like to compliment u on such a good article.I had to undergo a c-section2 yrs ago when I had my son due to non progression of labor despite being in pain for about 8 hrs .I had a spinal epidural injected and my surgery went absolutely painless and so was the recovery ,I was able to carry my baby and walk to my car one floor down on the third day .I have had no problems whatsoever with either the stitches or anything. my baby is healthy to date.thanx to my doc.mrs Renu Makker in Lucknow. But I would really like to know whether the trouble that my baby underwent those 8 hrs with continuous decrease of amniotic fluid could in anyway affect his development.Well he is normal but is really hyperactive and has a delayed language development. kindly see if u could get some related articles.

Good article. I feel sorry for all the women who have written saying they have problems either during or after a c-section. Childbirth is such a joyous time and not a time you should have added worries about spinal headaches or not being able to walk for a few days after. I have had two c-sections and will have my 3rd in March. I wouldn't have childbirth any other way!

Well i had a c-section also with both my children. My first experience with it was a nightmare. I believed i could feel what the doctors were doing to me even when i had an epidural. With my second i was put under anasthetic and it went fine but in my post partum i had developed an infection in my operation making it very painful again.. Now i am pregnant with my third and final and was informed that i had to have a c-section regardless. I really wanted to try natural labour but i couldn't. I would like to hear other stories of people who went through epidurals and had any problems. this time i am having a spinal and i am worried that it won't work and the pain i will feel. But just as long as the baby is healthy i really will get over it.

I had a c-section done in July of last year because I was in labour for 13 hours and my cervix was not dilating. I was given an Epidural in the spine which resulted in me having a spinal headache, twitching of the eyes, profuse sweating and alot more things. However I was happy that my doctor did it because I wouldn't hava had enough energy to push if I could have a normal delivery. I was however disappointed with the fact that no information about post c-section delivery. I must say thank god however for a safe delivery and a healthy, beautiful baby boy.

First let me say that this site is excellent! However, the article I think should be more detailed. I myself had a C-section since my baby's head never fixed till the last day and labour pains started. The doctor tried pitocin for 4 hours. Even then the head did not come down. The baby was in a slanted position (floating). That is why I had a C-section finally. I was given local spinal injections and the operation was painless. I also did not have any problems and started walking in 2 days. Went home on 4 th day. However, I wonder if a C-section has any effect on mother-child relationships or affects the child in any way. Any views on this?

The info on the cc-section was very good but it was incomplete in the sense that post operative care should have been included. I myself delivered through c-section 5 months ago because the baby got distressed. Everything was fine till yhe delivery gynae was very nice but she did not give much info on after the delivery problems. The c-section delivery comes with lot of pain, anxiety and depression especially when its your first born. The site should carry more info on post operative care.

The site is one of the best on subject. I had a c-section after being in labour for 36 hours as the baby was in occipito posterior position and baby's head was also big. I was just not mentally prepared for a caesarian and i was told just 1/2 hr. before the operation. I spent painful 5-6 days after the operation. Anyways what really matters is a healthy baby and a good recovery for the mother. Rest is upto God.

A very interesting article on C-Section. Reading it, it would be clearer to mothers to be the procedure of C-Section and the situtions in which it is required. I also had our daughter delivered after a c-section apparently because the fetus went into distress. Though for 4 days I was in pain, but today happy to have a complete family. What I suggest you could also add to this section is some general information about Post C-Section operative care, which would be useful to the readers.

I was in india with my mother at the time of my delivery. Everything was going on smoothly till the 8th month when the doctors told me to get a scan every week to check the liquer(amniotic fluid) which they suspected was quite less.Strange things started coming to my mind about the type of delivery I would have. I wanted a normal one like any other woman. My water bag burst one day i.e on the exact day of the end of my 9 months. The doctors carried on a c-section on me.Tough I was not mentally prepared for it, my husband made me understand that we did'nt have a choice, as I was losing out on the little fluid I had with each contraction. I must say that I underwent lot of pain and suffering for those 7 days in hospital.I could not even lift my baby, and as they(the doctors) had given me EPIDURAL INJECTION there was lot of pain and soreness in my spine and I had developed severe headache, and not to mention the excruciating pain in the stitches. But as they say all is well that ends well, when I look at my daughter now who is 1 year old I think that That's the best thing that has happened to me besides a loving and wonderful husband without whose support I would not have been able to take the pain. THANK YOU GOD FOR MY PERFECT FAMILY.

I had a c-section about a year ago when my daughter was born. I was a very healthy person all along my pregnancy. My labor was progressing normally until I took the epidural. I felt very chilly and developed very high temperature and as a result the baby in my womb got into distress. As a result, the doctors did a c-section to save the baby. Only when I spoke to the doctors later did I find out that epidural is not suitable for everybody. But I am very happy to have a very healthy baby who is real smart for her age. She was 8 lbs 1 ounce at birth.

A very informative article. More should be discussed on uterine rupture as a risk of VBAC. I had low transverse incision and with my next baby my uterus ruptured during labour. Was extremely painful and almost life threatening for me and baby. The possibility of uterine rupture should not be downplayed, as it often is. It is a very real possibility!

We had to go for a c-section when our baby was born. I wouldn't know what labour pains are, but I'm sure they're stronger than any pain any male can feel and stay conscious. Our baby is healthy, and none the worse for the mode of delivery, and that's what counts.
