What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is an ancient medical science through which numerous diseases can be cured. Find out the effective Ayurvedic treatment areas and the common diseases which can be cured with the help of Ayurvedic medicines.

The root of Ayurvedic medicine is in India and its origin is in the Vedic period. If you consider the concept of Ayurvedic medicine, you will be surprised to find striking similarities with the allopathic mode of treatment. Ayurveda revolves around the principle of the five basic elements in nature. It functions and works around the belief that the entire universe and even the human body constitutes a whole through the five basic elements of air, earth, ether, fire and water.

Medical Theory of Ayurveda

The medical theory of Ayurveda considers the component units of the human body like this.

  • Plasma is Rasa Dhatu
  • Blood is Rakta Dhatu
  • Flesh or muscle is Mamal Dhatu
  • Fat is Medha Dhatu
  • Marrow is Majja Dhatu
  • The semen and the reproductive organs in the female constitute the Sukra Dhatu

The Oriental Medical Science

Ayurveda is considered to be at par with the European medical concept as an Oriental science. “Humour” is considered as a vital tool for balance in the human body according to the Elizabethan medical theories. Similarly, the Ayurvedic medicine also considers the importance of balancing bile, phlegm and wind for ensuring the health of the human body. As per the concept of Ayurveda, if the balance is lost or disturbed in any manner, it can result in “Dosas” or defects in the metabolic system of the human body. Only when the bile, phlegm and wind are in the rightful proportions, the body is free from ailments.

The Therapeutic Quality of Ayurveda

According to Ayurveda, there are 20 essential gunas or qualities that are a typical part of every substance in this universe, and the human body is no different from it. When any of the fundamental qualities of the body gets disturbed due to an imbalance of bile, phlegm or wind, one can safely resort to the remedial measures in Ayurvedic medicines. The therapeutic regimen of Ayurveda usually consists of exercise, meditation and massage. The imbalance caused in the physiological system of the body can be effectively rectified through the therapeutic regimen. Apart from this, the patient as well as the healer must make note of a vital point. Apart from maintaining a right balance of the component humours, there ought to be a healthy digestive system whereby the undesired toxic elements are properly excreted.

The Most Common and Effective Ayurvedic Treatment Areas

There are eight distinct disciplines in Ayurveda. The human physiology is composed of a well defined organic system. The scope of effectiveness of Ayurvedic treatment lies in field like:

  • Psychiatry
  • Pediatric conditions
  • Surgery
  • Immunity issues
  • Toxicology
  • Childbearing factors
  • Eye, ear, nose and throat disorders

Basically, Ayurveda has a holistic approach towards treatment. It serves its purpose by insisting that a proper balance must always be maintained. The human body reacts with certain instinctive urges and desires. These are related to the regular activities like consumption of food and drink, sleep and sexual activities. The main aspect of treatment is to proportionally treat each activity. Like every other treatment method, the diagnosis in Ayurveda is very important. The overall structure inclusive of height and weight is measured and the aspect of his abnormality is assessed. The factors that will help the patient regain his stability is then decided upon. One can find a lot of information on the “whys” and “hows” of Ayurveda in the Charak Samhita. In the present age, Ayurveda is gaining a lot of popularity as an alternative mode of treatment.
