Yoga for Depression

Depression can cause various health disorders. But it is very easy to cope with depression by practicing yoga regularly. Read on to find more about the benefits of practicing yoga while coping with depression. You will also find information on yoga asanas which are beneficial for coping with depression.

Depression is described and experienced in different ways. However, in simple words, it is a combination of negative feelings in the suffering person that makes him lethargic and sad. In fact, if this feeling persists for more than two weeks, it is called depression and is a matter of concern and sometimes medication also. If unattended, it may lead to serious health problems.

However, if the symptoms are detected earlier and the person is motivated to make use of some specific yoga asanas, he will certainly feel improvement in his mental, emotional and physical health. But if the case is severe, it is advisable that you do not stop medicines while practicing yoga.

Depression and anxiety has been treated with the help of meditation and yoga asanas. Though medical literature has given almost no stress on yoga and meditation, today doctors believe and recommend yoga to patients suffering from depression.


Benefits of Yoga for Depression

Meditation is simply right way of breathing exercise and it helps lower the blood pressure, reduce heart rate and ease respiration.

It brings awareness, breathing and improves concentration. This benefits you physically and emotionally and you must focus on the correct form of yoga asana paying attention to balance and breathing.


Yoga Asanas for Depression

If you are coping with depression you can practice following yoga asanas under expert’s supervision.

Simhasana or Lion Pose – This helps loosen up your muscles with a tight and clenched jaw. Muscles of the face is used and relaxed. Repetition of this pose eases the tension by melting it away. You can yell or roar while performing this yoga asana for better results.

Matsya Asana – This releases the pressure and tightness that is felt in the chest. This asana is very beneficial for tensed neck, shoulder and lower back muscles.

Balasana – This is a comforting and peaceful yoga asana. It also promotes a feeling of wellbeing and security. Arms and lower back feels tension free.

Virabhadrasana – This is an easy and yet very powerful asana. The person feels balanced and finds emotional and physical equilibrium with this asana.

Savasana – People usually find this asana very simple and some are skeptical about its benefits. In reality the benefits of savasana is endless. This asana relaxes the person completely. People suffering from insomnia can end their day with this pose. They will get rid of the problem very soon and will have a good and sound sleep.

Yoga is a very good way to fight with depression. It has no side effects and it will benefit you by and large. Just stay focused and have faith in this age old tradition of staying fit and healthy. You will find that you have improved balance and mood and will release tension from your body as well as mind.

Prefer taking positive and practical approach towards fighting depression. If you opt for yoga and do it regularly and correctly you will not only find a difference in getting cured from depression, but you will also feel energetic and enthusiastic after some time. Avoid any strenuous yoga asana and make sure you do not feel any pain in your body.

Take a yoga class to learn the right way of doing yoga asanas so that you get the maximum benefit. Do not give up hope or practicing yoga in any case. Be consistent and regular. Meditation will bring dramatic difference in your life, if done successfully.
