Causes of Infertility in Females

Causes of Infertility in Females

Infertility is one of the major causes of distress in the life of a married woman. Infertility in women can be due to various factors. The treatment options for infertility in women depend on the type of infertility and the causative factor. The most common cause of infertility in women is ovulation disorder and aging. With age, the chance of getting pregnant becomes slim. Let us study in detail the causative factors of infertility in women.

Just like men, infertility in women can be due to a wide number of factors, each complex in their own way. With the advancement of medical technology, most of them are treatable. Ovulation disorder is found to be most common cause of infertility in female.

The Other Causes Are:

  • The blockage of fallopian tubes
  • Disorders in the reproduction tract due to endometriosis or pelvic inflammatory diseases
  • Congenital birth defects where the uterine structures and the uterine fibroids gets affected due to numerous miscarriages
  • The other major factor is aging

How ovulation disorders cause infertility?

Ovulation disorder refers to the malfunctioning of the reproduction system. This problem encompasses several other systems like the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, thyroid gland, adrenal gland and the genital organs too. For instance if the progesterone levels are low, which are produced by the ovaries, the lining of the uterine wall does not build up which is potentially preparing itself for the fetus. Then again ovulation is triggered by the luteinizing hormone and the follicle stimulating hormone. But when the gonadotropin hormone released by the hypothalamus does not occur, ovulation stops. Further if there is a tumor or Prolactinoma is the pituitary gland, it fails to produce the essential prolactin hormone that is responsible for stimulating milk production and triggers ovulation.

There are several other factors that cause ovulation problems:

  • PCOS or the polycystic ovary syndrome
  • Hypo and hyper thyroidism
  • Problem with the adrenal gland secretion
  • Excessive obesity or sudden and extreme weight loss
  • Diabetes
  • High amount of stress or excessive exercise
  • Other psychological factors causing hormonal imbalance
  • Early menopause is another cause where the ovaries simply fail to produce enough eggs even if the woman is relatively young.

Blockage in the Fallopian Tubes

Endometriosis, ectopic surgery or a pelvic inflammatory disease can cause a blockage in the fallopian tubes. Even a ruptured appendix can be a factor apart from unusual structural disorders that are a result of birth defects. Blockage can be caused by presence of fibroids inside the uterus or accumulation of scar tissues in the adhesion or the unconnected structures within the uterus and pelvic area. This naturally hinders the free movement of the eggs from the ovary to the uterus.

The fertilized egg cannot implant in the uterus

This infertility factor is caused by changed property of the cervical mucus. In normal cases the cervical mucus is thick in texture. This makes it difficult for the sperm to enter till before ovulation takes place. After ovulation, the mucus transforms into a clear and elastic fluid so that the sperm can easily swim through the mucus and reach the uterus and fallopian tubes.

But in abnormal situations, this transformation of mucus does not take place. This is caused by some infection or the presence of antibodies which hinders a successful pregnancy.

Age

A woman’s fertility is greatly affected by aging. When a woman is 25, she has about 25% chance of getting pregnant during intercourse and the percentage rapidly falls with the advancement of age. After her mid-thirties and by the time she is in her early forties, the chances are as less as 5-10%. As the reproductive system goes inactive, the woman has to deal with several compound infertility issues.

Apart from the depletion of the ovarian reserve, there are other factors to contend with. Some eggs remain in the ovary and do not mature. With the advancement of age when these eggs are released, they usually are found to have a hard outer covering which the sperm fails to penetrate and fertilize, thus leading to infertility.

PID

A major cause of infertility is the Pelvic Infertility Disease. This is caused by the infection of the cervix, ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus or the pelvis primarily by bacteria causing sexually transmitted diseases. These bacteria can enter the system during abortion, ruptured appendix, and insertion of IUDs, childbirth or hysterectomy.

I have a blockage in fallopian tubes and for this I have not been able to conceive. I am thinking of undergoing IVF as this is the only way of having a baby. I want to know if there are any other methods of having a baby for women with infertility issues.
