10 Ways Parents Can Hamper their Child

Certain habits of parents can make it difficult for children to grow and develop into well balanced and successful individuals. Here is how some parents hamper their child’s success.

All parents think about their child’s best at heart. They do everything in their capabilities to ensure that their children get the best of everything. Each parents’ desire is that their children grow up to be successful adults. But often unconsciously they hamper the success of their children. Given below are some such instances.

1. Pressure

Kids do need a little pressure from their parents to perform better. But many parents go overboard. From a very young age they pressurize their children, pushing them too hard to do better. This can have a negative effect on the child’s progress.

2. Comparison

Indian parents have the habit of comparing their kids with every other kid, especially in case of studies. They keep scolding them because they cannot be as good as some neighbour who tops his class. Each child is different and parents do not understand. This makes children lose confidence.

3. Importance to Academics only

Academics are no doubt important, but your child might have an aptitude for something else. Had Tendulkar‘s parents barred him from cricket lessons, the nation would not have got such a hero. If your child shows potential in extracurricular, do not discourage them.

4. Making Choices for Them

Indian parents have a bad habit of choosing the course of their child’s future without realizing that their child might want something else. Many parents insist their kids take up science, study medical or engineering without ever thinking that your child can be the next Tagore. Not being able to study what they love can hinder their success.

5. Over-Discipline

Discipline is essential but some parents become too overbearing over their children, dictating every step. Children require some personal space to mature and be confident about their selves. Parents should guide them but never dictate. This can make your children feel claustrophobic and divert them from studies.

6. Criticism

Many parents have been found to criticize every move their kids make. They constantly criticize their kids, never appreciating their successes or achievements. These kids start hating their parents and do things which hurt them, which hamper their success in future.

7. Parents Fighting

An unhealthy atmosphere at home affects kids like nothing else. If the parents keep fighting all the time, it affects the kid mentally. They are wary of such fights and in the long run they can in turn imbibe these qualities and become aggressive individuals. Kids also cannot concentrate if their parents fight all the time.

8. Child Abuse

Many parents feel that the only way to discipline their children is to abuse them physically. They beat the child if they make any mistake. Children who suffer abuse later display aggressive behaviour and inflict violence upon others. They are also scared and this occupies their thoughts so much that they are unable to concentrate on studies.

9. Spoiling

Many parents give their kids a wide berth and lots of freedom with no pressure. Excess of nothing is good. The kids who have no pressure and are not disciplined tend to grow up spoilt. They do not care about studying or having a good future. They waste their vital years and suffer later in life.

10. Ignorance

Many parents are so busy with their work that they cannot spend time with their children or take time out to check upon their progress. Such kids tend to miss their parents and lack motivation to be successful in life.

If you feel that you are practicing any of these then it is high time you rectify yourself. Parents are an important part of the kid’s life and it is essential that parents keep tabs on their kids and ensure that their kids are heading towards success.

How do parents hamper the success of their children? What are the ways to raise well balance and successful children? Which parenting habits can create hindrances for children to develop into a successful individual? Discuss here.
